Cars in the Republic of Ireland have unique license plates.

For example: Plate 06-D-45406 means the car was first registered in 2006 in Dublin. 45406 is the actual vehicle number and would correspond to the 45,406th vehicle registered in Dublin that year.

Note: The Republic of Ireland is unique in this registration method. Cars registered in Northern Ireland, and the UK, are not unique and have yellow plates with black lettering.

Set up: Each child is given a copy of the county abbreviations below. Use a crayon, as pencils and pens can be dangerous to use while driving, and felt pens can get all over upholstery.

To play the game, the rules are simple...

1) Each child will look for car license plates while the family is traveling.
2) The first child to spot a unique plate must quietly call out the plate to the passenger parent/guardian for verification.
3) To get the credit, the child must pronounce the word in Irish, then the child marks the form with a checkmark or X.
4) The first child to complete the form wins a prize, which is supplied by the parent...such as a sweet, toy, book, money, etc.

Important: While it might be difficult to find every plate on the list, the prize can be given to the child who's spotted the most unique plates by the end of the trip.

** This is a great way for parents to bond with their children, and for siblings to learn teamwork.

Enjoy!!!
